Happy news has finally hit the track and field arena with three big events getting the go ahead after a long pause in the Athletic calendar of Sri Lanka, with official word coming from the Athletics Association this morning. (25)

“National Athletics Meet 2020 Probable” says Kularathne

A press release circulated to the media by the Vice President of the AASL, G L S Perera stated that three events, including the Junior and Senior Nationals, will take place starting in October.

While a National pool was selected following the South Asian Games 2019, by the newly appointed Head Coach and the board of AASL, sadly, the pool was scattered almost immediately due to the Covid-19 pandemic hitting the island mid-March.

This pool was named with results from the 2019 SAG with Gold medalists and other top performers being called in to train under the tutelage of experienced mentors in Y K Kularathne and Pradeep Nishantha.

However, this preliminary pool was missing a few big names. Many athletes faced an unfortunate fate days before the SAG when they contracted the Dengue virus, due to the poor facilities they were given to train under. And some even dropped out of the 2019 Nationals, which was the final trial for the SAG, citing injury.

Some might say the AASL has taken a wise call to give everyone an equal chance yet again to earn their spots back in the new National pool. Giving opportunities to National athletes such as Shelinda Jansen, Nimali Liyanarachchi and Rumeshika Rathnayake they will host the first set of Trials on the 23, 24 & 25th August, as the first day back on the track.

Building from it, they will move into the month of November for the Junior National Athletics Championship on the 21, 22, 28 and 29th. To close out the year, the Senior National Athletic Championship will move to the Sugathadasa Stadium in the first week of December.

All three meets will take place at the Sugathadasa Stadium, practicing safety regulations at all times.
