The National Athletics Calendar to kick off 2020 has officially been released by the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka. The calendar contains a packed season with multiple tournaments per month, in both local and international arenas.

Trincomalee takes the first lease with the Sri Lanka Navy Inter Command Athletics Championship on the 10th and 11th of January. Kandy will then take over with the Kandy District Athletics Championships at the Digana Grounds. To close off the opening month will be the 1st Test for the Junior pool selected through the competition held in 2019.

February will prove a big month for our stars from the 2019 South Asian Games as seven of the best performers from Nepal will be taking part in the 9th Asian Indoor Athletics Championship in China. Along with it will be the SL Army Voluntary Force Cross Country Championship, 3rd International Race Walking Championship and the 2nd Test for the Junior Pool will fill up February.

March is mainly dedicated to the international events with the IAAF World Indoor Championship kicking the month off in China simultaneous to the Asian 20km Race Walking Championship in Japan. The 15th Asian Cross Country and the IAAF Half Marathon Championship will close off March with the Test for the 3rd and final Junior Pool.

Sugathadasa will be busy in the month of April with two local events, the 1st selection trial for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and the Selection trial for the Asian Junior Athletics Championship.

IAAF World Race Walking Cup, 19th Asian Junior Athletics Championship and the Sri Lanka Army Voluntary Force Athletics Championship will take place in the month of May.

June will bring about the 98th National Championship which will also act as the final selections for the Olympics; The Junior Nationals will follow the main event. Asian Relays are set to take place in June, although the venue is yet to be decided.

July will be this year’s biggest month for Athletics with Tokyo bringing the world the XXXII Olympic Games. The IAAF World U20 Championship will take place in Nairobi within the month as well as the Asian Half Marathon.

Korea is scheduled to host the Mokpo International Throws Meet in August.

September is filled with the 32nd Youth Games along with the Marathon event. The National Sports Festival will most likely take place in the month of September as well, possibly at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.
