The visitors are looking to level the series as the 2nd and final 4-day game between Sri Lanka ‘A’ and South Africa ‘A’, kicked off today at P. Sara Stadium in Colombo.
Kamindu Mendis took the responsibility as the Captain of Sri Lanka ’A’ as the hosts made some big changes to their playing XI from the first game, bringing in Nishan Madhushka, Minod Bhanuka, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Praveen Jayawickrama and Vishwa Fernando, to replace Nipun Dhananjaya, Janith Liyanage, Nuwanidu Fernando, Lasith Embuldeniya and Dilshan Madhusanka.

The Proteas too made five changes as Zubayr Hamza, Kyle Verreynne, Beyers Swanepoel, Lubabalo Sipamla and Tshepo Moreki made their way into the playing XI in place of Jordan Hermann, Sinethemba Qeshile, Dewald Brevis, Gerald Coetzee and Kwena Maphaka.

Sri Lankan Skipper Kamindu Mendis decided to bat first after winning the toss, and the in-form Nishan Madhushka and Lasith Croospulle came out as openers, putting on a half-century stand in 13.2 overs. The latter was trapped in front of the stumps by Senuran Muthusamy for 33, and Croospulle was stumped for 27 in the same over as the hosts slumped to 62/2 after a good start.

Keeper-batter Minod Bhanuka joined Pasindu Sooriyabandara to rebuild the Sri Lanka ‘A’ innings. However, after bringing it up to a 50-run partnership, rain stopped play and the players had to take their lunch a little earlier than usual due to the weather conditions.
After the break, the duo added another 28 runs to the total before Sooriyabandara was castled by Lutho Sipamla for a well-made 41. In the very next over, Muthusamy removed Bhanuka for 32, and soon after Lizaad Williams got the wicket of Skipper Kamindu Mendis, reducing Sri Lanka ‘A’ to 142/5.
However, the Sri Lankan lower-middle order batters showed some resistance to keep the scoreboard ticking, with Lahiru Udara making a useful 33 runs, while Lakshitha Manasinghe departed after scoring 13. Ramesh Mendis and Milan Rathnayake remained unbeaten on 38 and 29 respectively, helping Sri Lanka ‘A’ to post 257/7 on the opening day.

On the other hand, Muthusamy registered his 3rd five-wicket haul on this tour, while Lizaad Williams and Lutho Sipamla shared two wickets between them as 24 overs were lost to rain.
