The 1st of the 2 four-day games between Sri Lanka ‘A’ and South Africa ‘A’, kicked off today (12th June), at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.

Sri Lanka ‘A’ Skipper Nipun Dhananjaya won the toss & had no hesitation to bat first on a batting-friendly pitch. Lasith Croospulle and Lahiru Udara walked in as openers, getting off to a good start with a 66-run partnership. Kwena Maphaka drew the first blood for the Proteas, dismissing Udara for 42, which came off just 61 balls including 7 boundaries. Nuwanidu Fernando replaced Udara, but his brief stay ended for just 10 by slow left-arm bowler Senuran Muthusamy as the hosts lost their second wicket for 106 on the stroke of lunch.
After the lunch break, Kamindu Mendis joined well-set Croospulle, who completed his half-century, to add 48 runs for the third wicket before Mendis became the second victim of Muthusamy for a 28-run knock at the total of 154. The home side had lost their way completely after a solid platform and was reduced to 198/6. Croospulle was to be the lone warrior for Sri Lanka ‘A’, but unfortunately fell two runs short of a well-deserved hundred, which comprised 11 fours & 4 sixes off just 119 deliveries.
The visitors were looked to wrap Sri Lanka ‘A’ innings in a quick time, but Ramesh Mendis’ who came in as the No. 8 batsman, played an absolutely brilliant counter-attacking knock to take Sri Lanka ‘A’ beyond 300-run mark. The latter smashed 89-ball 78 runs with 12 fours, while Lasith Embuldeniya and Milan Rathnayake too contributed with some useful cameos of 15 and 23* respectively.
For the visitors, Muthusamy was the star with the ball in hand, finishing with 7 for 122 as Sri Lanka ‘A’ were bowled out for 325 in 83 overs. Apart from him, Kwena Maphaka picked up a couple of wickets, while Tristan Stubbs also scalped one. In the meantime, the Umpires called stumps on Day 1.
