Nirod and Shehara from Sri Devananda College crowned Sea Swimming Champions

Nirod Theekshana De Silva and Shehara Anuhansi De Silva, representing Sri Devananda College, Ambalangoda were crowned as the Men’s Champion and the Women’s Champion respectively of the 49th Annual 2-mile Open Sea Swimming Championship 2024. organized by the Ambalangoda Dharmasoka College Sports Board and Junior Alumni Association.

The  Sea Swimming Competition was held at the beach near Ambalangoda Thanayama on the 18th of February 2024.

16-year-old Nirodh Theekshana de Silva, who competed in the Men’s Open section, took a time of 40:56.89 minutes to finish the race. 18-year-old Shehara Anuhansi de Silva, who competed in the Women’s Open, clocked a 48:25.42 minutes to finish the event.

An hour and 15 minutes were given  to all participants as the optimal time to finish the event, and 191 of the participating athletes finished the race within that time period. In the Women’s section, 36 players finished the event within that time period.

Open Men’s Section

In the Men’s section, Nirodh Theekshana de Silva secured the first position, while Akash Prabhaswara and Methvan Fernando, who represented St. Joseph’s College, Colombo secured the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. The times taken by the duo to finish the race were 41:00.05 and 41:14.46 respectively.

The oldest player to finish the competition ahead of given time was  R. M. Kantha Karunaratne of Ambalangoda Old Shokians Swimming Club. The 63-year-old clock clocked 1:14:42.00 hours to finish the race.

Open Women’s Section

In the women’s section, Shehara Anuhansi De Silva bagged the first position, while 15-year-old Hesara De Silva of Ambalangoda Prajapati Girls’ College bagged the 2nd position and Anarkali De Silva, 19, of Dharmasoka College bagged the third position.

Overall Open Category

Dharmasoka College won the women’s team championship with 94 points while Sri Devananda College secured the 2nd position with 31 points. Ambalangoda Prajapati Girls’ College secured the third position with 30 points.

Colombo Women’s College bagged the 4th position and The Defence Faculty of Kothalawala bagged the 5th position. They scored 16 and 13 runs respectively.

In the men’s section, St. Joseph’s College, Colombo secured the first position with 84 points, followed by Sri Lanka Army with 58 points and Sri Devananda College with 32 points.

The fourth place in the tournament was held by Ambalangoda Dharmasoka College with 29 points and the fifth place was held by The Sri Lanka Navy with 16 points.
