National Para Intermediate Swimming Championships 2024

The National Paralympic Committee of Sri Lanka organized the National Intermediate Para-Swimming Championships after 11 years yesterday at NCC Swimming Pool. The last appearance of a Para Swimming Meet in Sri Lanka was in 2013. 

Around 35 islandwide Para Swimmers participated in 73 events under 3 age groups of Under 15, Under 20 and open.  

This competition was conducted to build a national pool of Para Swimmers as a developmental strategy, and to set standards in Para Swimming. Sri Lanka’s current elite and Para Asian Games medallists, Galina Basnayake and Naveed Raheem, also took part in three events at the competition.

The event started with classification procedures conducted by experts and a warm-up session where one might have witnessed heartwarming and lovely moments of Athletes of all skill levels supporting and encouraging one another. 

The National Paralympic Committee has collaborated with multiple organizations, including Rainbow Aquatics Club who is one of the main driving forces in Para-Swimming. The NPC also conducted a 5-day training camp for people interested in Swimming with the help and support of multiple volunteers.
