Richmond beat Nalanda to create history

Skipper Charith Asalanka bagged ten wickets to lead Richmond College to a historic nine wicket victory over Nalanda in the Inter School Under-19 Division I tournament encounter at Campbell Place on Monday.

Asalanka picked up seven wickets in the second innings to restrict the home team to 163 runs. Richmond reached the target of 44 runs in 4.2 overs.

According to Richmond College statistician Rohitha Wickramasekara the Richmond-Nalanda series which commenced in 1931 had been stopped after four editions. It had recommenced in 1967/68 and Richmond had not recorded a victory until Asalanka guided them to a nine wicket win at Campbell Place on Tuesday.

Left arm spinner Avishka Fernando’s six wicket haul in the firs innings and a seven wicket haul by Anton Maduranga in the second innings powered St. Joseph Vaz’s College to an innings and 70 runs victory over Revata College at Wennappuwa on Tuesday.

De Mazenod’s defy Geethal and Bens

Forced to follow on after being shot out for 91 runs, De Mazenod’s College had Akash Senaratne (74), Malshan Fernando (64) and Nishan Sanjula (44) making valuable contributions to deny St. Benedict’s an outright victory at Kotahena on Tuesday. Bens’ first innings hero Geethal Fernando who picked up five wickets including four wickets in four balls had to be content with a three wicket haul as the visitors posted 262 for 9 wickets.

Zahira-St. Servatius’ match stopped halfway

The Inter School Under-19 Division I cricket encounter between Zahira and St. Servatius’ at Maradana on Tuesday had to be stopped halfway due players disputing an umpire decision. In reply to Zahira’s total of 245 runs, St. Servatius’ were 147 for seven when the match was stopped. The Under-19 tournament secretary of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association, contacted for comments said: “According to umpires St. Servatius’ players have challenged an umpire decision and refused to continue the match. We will wait for umpire reports and will conduct an inquiry next week. We will forward our findings to the Executive Committee of the SLSCA and take a decision with regard to this match.”
