The Old Josephians led by Tharindu Ariyawansa beat their arch rivals Old Peterites by 6 wickets in the final of the Main Quadrangular yesterday (28).

This year it was the Old Peterites Sports Club who were the hosts of this prestigious Old Boy’s sporting flagship event of the Old Boys of the four premier Catholic Schools in Sri Lanka, namely, St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota, St. Benedict’s College, Colombo 13, St. Joseph’s College, Colombo 10 and St. Peter’s College, Colombo 4.

Petes to host the 51st Saints Quadrangular tournament

The 51st Saints’ Quadrangular Tournament will be held on 27th and 28th July 2018 at the St.Peter’s College this year.

The Old Boys of these schools come together once a year as a tradition to celebrate talent in camaraderie and fellowship whilst reliving their glory years.

The 51st edition of the tournament this year worked off on the 27th and 28th July and saw the two favorites making it through to the finals. The Old Peterites comfortably toppled the Old Anthonians by 5 wickets at Bambalapitiya on the opening day while the Old Josephians made light work of the Old Benedictines thrashing them by 151 runs thanks to a stunning century by Yashan Samarasinghe.

The Peterites won the toss and batted first in the final posting a competitive 268 all out in a game reduced to a 45 over affair at their home turf in Bambalapitiya. After a few early hiccups, the hosts recovered through a brilliant stand between Hashan Wanasekara and Manelkar De Silva to post a competitive total in the final. Both left handlers were brilliant to watch as they took the Josephian bowlers to the cleaners towards the latter part of their innings, with both batsman making half centuries. Manelkar De Silva was particularly impressive with his clean striking, while for the Joes Chathuranga Kumara and Priyamal Perera shared 7 wickets among them.

The Josephian run chase got off to a horrible start with their national caps Sadeera Samarawickrama and Dimuth Karunaratne falling cheaply. They initially recovered through a half century stand between centurion from the first day Yashan Samarasinghe and Roscoe Thattil, but the former was unfortunately run out when he was nearing a half century.

Priyamal Perera joined Thattil and the duo were involved in a staggering unbroken partnership of 173* for the 5th wicket as the Josephians romped home inside 36 overs.

While Perera remained unbeaten on 74*, Thattil went on to make an unbeaten century as the Old Joes secured the title after 7 long years.
