NCC and SL Ports are in sight of outright wins

Nondescript Cricket Club came back strongly to bowl out Moratuwa SC for 84 runs in the 2nd innings as the 3rd week matches of the SLC under 23 division 1 tournament 2014 continued their proceedings on day 2 around Colombo and its suburbs. 

NCC resumed their 1st innings on 48/2 and the Moratuwa seam bowler Chemila Obeysekara extracted early moisture on day as he single handedly restricted the strong NCC batting line up to 92 for 6 at one stage before spin bowling all-rounders, Saveen Nanayakkara and Tharindu Kaushal provided brilliant resistance to lift their team to 275 with the help of the remaining tail at NCC grounds. Saveen made 51 runs while Tharindu stroked 75 valuable runs and they were involved in a 105-run partnership for the 7th wicket. Tail end batsmen, Saranga Rajaguru, Mohommed Dilshad and Ravindu Thillakaratne provided morale-boosting contributions to take their team into a 46-run lead going into the 2nd innings. Impressive seamer Chemila Obeysekara finished with excellent figures of 6/53. 

Saveen Nanayakkara and Tharindu Kaushal haunted the Moratuwa batsmen with the ball as they did with the bat bundling out the visitors to a mere 84 runs. Both spinners took 4 wickets apiece to trigger a batting collapse. Skipper Deshan Dias top scored with 33 runs. Chasing 39 runs to win, NCC were 15/2 when the play was ended on day 2. 

SL Ports Authority CC need 68 runs more to register their 2nd outright victory of the season as they took full control of their match against Army SC at Panagoda. Skipper Prashan Wickramasinghe and AK Tyron scored 121 runs in their 6th wicket partnership which changed the course of the game in favour of visiting SLPACC team. Right handed Prashan made 73 runs while Tyron made a counter-attacking 66 runs. SLPACC posted a healthy 239 runs in their 1st innings with Naveen Sudarshana De Mel and Lakshan Edirisinghe sharing 7 wickets amongst themselves for Army SC.

Army SC started their 2nd innings with 94 runs behind. Spin Duo of Aravinda Premarathne and Anuk De Alwis once again tormented the Army batsmen as they shared 8 wickets to rattle the hosts for 161 runs in their 2nd innings. Anuk completed his five wicket haul while Aravinda captured 3 wickets. Both Spinners have taken 17 wickets out 20 during the course of the match. Dilshan Kanchana fought valiantly for his unbeaten 30* while Lasitha Madushan scored 29 runs for Army SC. 

Moors SC continued their dominance over Colts CC in their high-scoring encounter at Braybrooke place. Left-arm spinner Julian De Zilva removed the final two wickets of the Moors innings after conceding only 7 runs to the overnight score of 485. Colts CC found batting easy as well on a flat surface. 3 half-centuries were scored by Colts batsmen as they posted 322 for the loss of 9 wickets when the game was stopped on day 2. 

Skipper Shehan Fernando scored 58 runs at the top of the innings while middle order batters in Angelo Jayasinghe and Dinuk Wickramanayake scored 63 runs each. Double centurion Shehan Jayasinghe captured 3 wickets for the hosts. Moors SC need only 1 wicket to claim a resounding first innings victory.

Ananda college wicket-keeper batsman Pasindu Isira hammered a beautiful 113 runs to guide his team, Air Force SC to a resounding 1st innings victory over Negombo CC at Kadirana at close of play on day 2. Airmen were 6/1 overnight chasing the total of 153 made by the home team. After losing quick early wickets, Pasindu Isira scored 15 boundaries in his knock of 113 which came in 185 deliveries. 

One drop batsman, Kelum Nanayakkara accumulated 52 runs as Air Force made 290 runs in their 1st innings. Shehan Madusanka was the most impressive bowler with 4 wickets. Negombo CC started their 2nd innings with 137 runs behind and they were 39 for the loss of 1 wicket when the umpires called it a day.

SSC made short work of the Navy 1st innings score of 188 as the strong SSC batting unit posted a commendable 336 runs for 9 wickets declared on day 2 at SSC grounds. Resuming day 2 on 15 for no loss, SSC batsmen trounced the harp less Navy bowling attack as skipper Sanka Ramesh top scored with 89 runs while Minod Bhanuka scored 53 for the hosts. Dasun Shanaka made a 27-ball 45 runs while Josephian Pathum Madusanka remained unbeaten on 38.  Ishan Abeysekara and Kalhara Peiris captured 3 scalps apiece for Navy SC. Sailors in their 2nd essay were 48 for no loss in 11 overs with Akash Senarathne and Yohan Soysa looking comfortable.

Strong collective batting effort from the defending champions, Tami Union saw Ragama CC failing to win their game on 1st innings at P.Sara Oval grounds. Tamil Union resuming from their overnight score of 69/3 managed to score 222 in reply to Ragama’s first innings score of 202. Pramod Liyanagamage made the highest contribution for the hosts with 47 while Shifran Muthalif, Ron Chandragupta and Isuru Buddhik made 40, 33, 32 runs respectively. Amila Aponso captured 4 wickets for the visitors while Supeshala Jayathilake, Tharindu Rukshan and Lahiru Jayarathne bagged 2 scalps each. 

Ragama CC in their 2nd innings was 152 for the loss of only 3 wickets in 35 overs at stumps on day 2 with the game heading to a draw. Peterites, Lahiru Milantha and Janith Liyanage starred for Ragama in the 2nd innings with 61 and 38* respectively.
