41st National Sports Festival - Day one

The much awaited National Sports Festival for the year 2015 commenced on 18th Friday at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium in the honorable presence of the Sports Minister himself.

Taking a great leap the Sports Ministry had taken measures to organise the festival with more efficiency in comparison to the the last few years providing transport, accommodation to all the participants and the journalists which is a factor that should be appreciated and applauded.

Two Sri Lankan Records

Ayesha Maduwanthi who held Sri Lankan record for hammer throw in the women’s category bettered the performance this year. Her previous record which was staged last year in Anuradhapura was forty two meters and seventy four centimeters. Coming back with a better performance this year she broke her own previous and recorded a distance of forty three meters and eighteen centimeters.

The second national record for the second day was by N.C.D Priyadharshani for the women’s long Jump event. The previous national record was set in Bangkok by Nayanthi Kumari Chandrasena with a distance of six meters and four centimeters in the year 2002. Priyadhrshani renewed it by recording a distance of six meters and forty three centimeters. It was also recorded as a new meet record.

Four New Meet Records

The maiden record for the festival came off in 800m women event as W.K.L. Nimali as she  crossed the white line with a timing of two minutes and five second which was considered as a new meet record.

The second record was in favour of M.H.I Sandaruwan who came nailed the pole vault event with a height of four meters and eight three centimeters. It was also recorded as a new meet record.

W.P.E.R. Dulakshi who competed from the Southern Province team renewed the meet record for women’s 400m hurdle event as she clocked a timing of fifty nine point five seconds. Another new meet record was set by M.V Suranjaya who competed himself from the Southern Province team. He clocked a timing of twenty one seconds in the men’s 200m event which was such an eye pleaser.

As the rain tumbled down, the rest of the events were postponed to the third and final day of the event.
