Sri Lanka beat Malaysia 72-40 at the 13th Asian Netball Championship 2024

Sri Lanka exhibited their strength in a dominant 72-40 win against two-time champions Malaysia at the 13th Asian Netball Championship 2024 at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium in Bangalore, India.

The two unbeaten sides met in the final game of day 6 to decide who would finish top of group A. In previous outings, Sri Lanka had come away with the win but narrowly.

Both teams matched each other goal for goal and were 6-6 at one time. However, Sri Lanka went on a 5-0 run to lead 11-6 before finishing the 1st quarter 18-11.

The defending champions stamped their authority in the 2nd quarter, going on a 6-0 run from 24-16 to 30-16 and an 8-4 scoring run from 32-18 to 40-22 to end the quarter. Sri Lanka out-scored Malaysia 22-11 in that quarter to lead by 18-goals at the half time break.

Sri Lanka opened the 3rd quarter scoring 4 unanswered goals making it 44-22 before Malaysia replied with a 0-3 run of their own (47-28) showing a glimpse of a comeback. However, Sri Lanka scored 4 of the last 5 goals to end the quarter with a 21-goal lead at 56-35 (16-13).

Sri Lanka’s defense led by Gayani Dissanayake at Goal-Keeper and her lieutenants Suseema Bandara (Wing Defense) and Malmi Hettiarachchi (Goal Defense) who were impressive throughout, upped their game in the 4th quarter giving away only 5-goals in 10 attempts. While on the other end Sri Lanka scored 16 off 20 attempts.

Captain & Wing Attack Dulangi Wannithilake and Gayanjali Amarawansa (Center) combined well with Thishala Algama (Goal Shooter) and Rashmi Perera at Goal Attack. Thishala Algama was again in immaculate form scoring 51 off 54 at 94% while Rashmi Perera added 21 off 27 at 78%. Overall, Sri Lanka shot 72 off 81 at 89%.
