The Colombo Malay Cricket Club (CMCC) has officially formed a Rugby team that will compete in the ‘C’ Division Club Rugby tournament from this season onwards.

Malays in Sri Lanka have traditionally done well in the oval ball sport and now the CMCC has embarked on a new journey creating history by forming their very own Rugby Club.

Known by many for their achievements in cricket, the CMCC is all set to compete in the division ‘C’ of the Club Rugby League.  Getting on board to sponsor the newly formed club for the next 5 years, Dr. Akram Booso, owner of ‘Booso’s Dental Chamber’, stated that he’s confident the club will reach greater heights within three years, and compete against the top clubs in the ‘A’ Division.

Coaching duties have been handed over to the well-experienced, Amjad Bucksh, former Kingswood, CR, Havelock and Hambanthota Sharks scrum-half. Talking to ThePapare.com, Bucksh stated that with the current 30 player training group, he looks forward to building a 35-member squad ahead of the ‘C’ division league. He also added that since the team possesses players from Schools such as St. Peter’s, Zahira and Trinity – he’s confident that the team can qualify to the top tier in a short period of time.

The managerial board consists of former Rugby players, namely, the current President of the CMCC Mr. Ibnusha Ali, Chairman Maj. Gen. Royce Sallay and Manager, Brig. T. M. Bohoran.

The Administrative board:

President – Ibnusha Ali
Chairman CMCC Rugby – Maj. Gen. Royce Sallay
Secretary – Rinaldeen Rahman
Manager – Brig. T. M. Bohoran
Sponsor – Dr. Akram Booso
Club Captain – Rizwan Badurdeen

Former Peterite Pooji Malavige has been given the privilege of leading the first ever CMCC Rugby team alongside his deputy, former Zahira Skipper, Mohommed Naleef.
