Former Sri Lanka Test Captain Suranga Lakmal has informed Sri Lanka Cricket that he will retire from all forms of International Cricket following the completion of the upcoming Sri Lanka Tour of India 2022.

I’m indebted to Sri Lanka Cricket for giving me this astonishing opportunity and having faith in me to bring back my mother land honour as it has been absolute pleasure to be associated with the board that shaped my professional life and also enriched my personal development. I have nothing but the utmost respect for all my players, coaches, team managers, support staff, administrative staff and all other supportive staff,’’ Lakmal said in his retirement letter submitted to Sri Lanka Cricket.

Lakmal represented the country in 165 internationals since making his debut in ODI cricket back in 2009. Though starting off as a limited overs cricketer, in recent years, he has been the spearhead of Sri Lanka’s Test bowling attack, claiming 168 wickets over 68 Tests.

The right-arm quick has particularly enjoyed the last 4 years, where he has picked up 69 wickets at an average of 24.46.

Having been handed the captaincy reins briefly in 2018, Lakmal enjoyed some success, leading the team to an away win against the West Indies in Bridgetown for the first time and then a home series win against South Africa as well.

Sri Lanka is set to play India in a 2-Test series beginning later this month, where, barring injury, Lakmal will feature in the playing XI.
