Our Vision

Our vision is to maintain the spirit of Kingswood amongst us, throughout our lives, so that our members will never fail in their lives wherever they go, whatever they do. The word “ Kingswood ” is not just a word, knowledge we gained, goals we achieved, strength we gathered, kindness we shared, responsibilities we fulfilled, everything we have done to this nation is because the spirit of Kingswood College Kandy.

Kingswood History

Kingswood College was established on the 4th in May 1891 named “Boys High School”. It was situated in Pavilion Street in the city, in Kandy. There were only eleven students at that time. Then it was move to Brownvidge Street.

The founder principal of the School was late Mr. L. E. Blaze. The school was managed by the Methodist Council Mission. In 1922 four Houses Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Rugby was introduced to the school. The students were called as the “Gentlemen of Kingswood” Kingswood was the pioneer to introduce the under mentioned features to the other schools in this island.

  • Introducing rugby football to Sri Lankan schools.
  • The first school to employ lady teachers in the staff.
  • Kingswood is one of the five schools to establish a cadet platoon.
  • Introducing in the school traffic controlling outside the school gate.

Kingswood OBA Australia was formed back in 2007, and the main objective of our association is to refresh and foster the friendship we made in our school days, to meet our fellow gentlemen and also to help Kingswood College, Kandy through the provision of additional funding and assistance towards betterment of our alma mater.

The highlight of the Kingswood OBA in Australia is the annual Rugby 7’s Tournament which is one of the most popular sporting events in the Sri Lankan community in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs which has started having international attraction as well. As the founders of School Rugby in Sri Lanka, we are very proud to have organized the first ever touch rugby 7’s tournament amongst the Sri Lankan schools/clubs in 2009. This event has been growing from strength to strength over the years and has been a great success for the past eight years, with sixteen teams and over seven hundred spectators taking part in the event last year.

With Kingswood Rugby 7s 2017 fast approaching, 20 teams have confirmed their participation in this year’s tournament, including teams from Kingswood College, Dharmaraja College, Trinity College, St. Anthony’s College, Royal College, St. Thomas College, St. Peters College, Wesley College, Isipathana College, combined team from D.S. Senanayake College & Mahanama College (Golden Brothers), combined team from Ananda College & Nalanda College (Maroons Rugby Union) couple of club teams being Atkinsons Rugby Union & Auckland Lions.

The following are some of the major improvements we have made in organizing this year’s tournament.

  • Access to qualified Referees at event.
  • Presence of a representative from Box Hill Rugby at the event.
  • Professional fixture for the tournament.
  • Splitting of the tournament to 4 main categories being cup, plate, bowl & shield which provides a better opportunity to all the teams who participate in the tournament.
  • Professional photo shoot of all the teams and team photographs. Photos of the games will be available for purchase on the day of the event.
  • Trophies and attractive prize money to all the winning teams and best player of the tournament.
  • Formal awards ceremony at the “Kings Rugby Ball”

This is the biggest sporting event organized by any Sri Lankan Association/club based in Australia for all the schools and clubs to participate. Our main objective is to make this event a National event which represents Sri Lankan community in Australia.

This event will be a good opportunity for you to meet members from the community and it will also be a great day out for the whole family to come and enjoy with different activities in place for kids. We have made every effort make our tournament enjoyable for all teams, and fans that attend. The primary goal of this tournament is to provide good competition, promote good sportsmanship and most of all friendship.
