The third day of the All Island Athletic Championship 2018 organized by the Ministry of Education concluded today (3rd) at the Sugathadasa Stadium with sixteen new meet records in the 40 finals that was completed today.

The morning session of the day sparked great interest with both Boy’s & Girl’s Under 16, 18 & 20 400m finals being worked off while the 200m sprint finals, under 16 & 20 4X400m finals and Under 18 4X100m finals sparked up the evening session.

200m & 400m records stumble at Kavindi’s pace

Kavindi Sanjana of President College –  Nawala who smashed the meet record in the Girl’s Under 16 400m at the Senior Tarbet, picked up from where she left off as she managed to clock an impressive time of 56.91secs in the final today. With this performance she bettered her own previous meet record of 58.67secs established last year. Kavindi was in a class of her own with the second and third placed Tharanga Kumari of Tammitagama M.V Mahawa (58.25) and H.A.A.P. Hettiarachchi of Viharamahadevi Girls College – Kandy (58.60) who also managed to better the previous meet record looking like they posed no threat to the upcoming star quarter miler.

Despite clinching a meet record early morning, the young speedster was not done as she came back in the evening session to deliver another terrific run in the Girl’s Under 16 200m finals. Kavindi clocked 25.47secs to win the final, bettering the 16-year-old previous meet record in the event by B B C Jayamanne of Tholangamuwa MMV. Despite being just 16 years of age the young sprinter from President College Nawala has emerged as one of the bright prospects and needs to be protected in order to reach her full potential in the future.

Double records for Hirusha

Hirusha Hashen managed to bounce back from his shock defeat in the Under 16 100m finals by breaking two meet records in the Under 16 Long Jump and the 200m.

Hirusha leapt 7.04m in the long jump to enter the history books as the first under 16 athlete to breach the 7m mark at the meet. Hashan Kosala of St. Mary’s College Chilaw was placed second leaping 6.44m while Pasindu Malshan of St Joseph’s College Colombo secured third place with a leap of 6.39m.

Having being shocked by Razni Ahamed in the 100m final, Hirusha showed great composure to win the Under 16 200m finals with a new meet record clocking 22.53secs, Isuru Kaushalya of Ananda Shastralaya  –  Matugama was placed second clocking 22.69secs with Tharushka Bashitha Udagedara Ruhunu Wijaya National school finishing third clocking 22.73secs ahead of HS Malewana who clocked 22.75. All four athletes bettered the previous meet record.

Rumesh Tharanga collects his second meet record

Peterite Rumesh Tharanga who created a new meet record in the Under 16 Discus Throw yesterday was back in action today collecting his second meet record with a throw of 66.49m in the Under 16 Boy’s Javelin Throw. Tharanga bettered the previous meet record of 60.08m by over 6 meters while he was way ahead of the rest of the competition with second placed Kavisha Maduranga also from St Peter’s only managing 57.82m while third placed Dinesh Dilhan of St. Mary’s Boy’s School Chilaw had his best throw measured at 55.58m.

Four records for St Peter’s

St. Peter’s showcased complete dominance in the Under 16 Age group today as they managed to collect 4 new meet records within the day. With two records coming from their star athlete Hirusha Hashen and Rumesh Tharanga collecting his second, the Peterite Under 16 4X400m relay team was up to the task in their final as they managed to produce the fourth record for the Bamabalapitiya school. They saw off a fierce challenge by Walala A Rathnayake CC to clock a record time of 3:31.11min to clinch the Gold while Walala who bettered the previous record clocking 3:32.39min had to be satisfied with a second place finish. Maris Stella College Negombo finished third clocking 3:34.08mins.
