Kandy secure top spot at Club Seven’s first leg

Kandy Sports Club returned to the Club Seven’s as a force to be reckon with and ended in style winning the final 26-05 against a spirited Police outfit.

Day two began with the Bowl/ Shield quarter finals with the winner proceeding to the Bowl semifinals and the loser being demoted to the Shield semifinals.

Police B began the day off with an impressive win over Navy C, defeating the Sailors 33-05. Army B received a walk over as Sabaragamuwa RFC did not turn up for the second day of the club sevens tournament.

CH & FC B and Petersons got over the line against Air Force B and Galle RFC setting up a bowl semifinal between the two winners.

The much anticipated Cup/ Plate semifinals saw defending champions Navy A surprisingly lose out to Air Force A in sudden death as the game was tied at 19 at full time.

Police A stunned Havelock SC in the second quarter final as the Park side’s failures continued.

The final two cup quarters saw CH & FC A and Kandy cruise through defeating Army A and Navy B with ease.

The winner of the cup quarter finals proceeded through to the cup semi finals while the losers had to settle for a place in the plate semifinals.

Navy C received the second walk over of the day in the absence of Sabaragamuwa RFC as Air Force B defeated Galle RFC to set up the shield final against Navy C.

Police B got the better out of Army B in a tight tussle which ended in favour of the former with a scoreline of 21-15. Meanwhile, CH & FC B made easy work of Peterson, setting up a Bowl final against Police B.

Navy A defeated Havelocks as their torrid time continued in the tournament while Army A defeated Navy B, setting up a final between the forces for the plate in the 2018 tournament.

Police turned around their fortunes from a defeat In their very first game on day one, and they defied all odds, putting away Air Force in a tight tussle, making their way to the cup final.

Worthy of a final, cup semi final two saw two heavy weights meet as CH & FC A met Kandy in a do or die encounter.

CH dominated the opening proceeding with two converted tries early on in the game, however Kandy hit back with vengeance, coming back to defeat the Maitland Crescent boys to win 26-21 and set up a final against Police A.

Shield Final (11th & 12th Place)

Air Force B made easy work of Navy C in the first final of the day as the airman beat the sailors by a massive 29-07 margin to secure 11th place in the firsts leg of the club sevens tournament.

Bowl Final (9th & 10th Place)

Police B took on CH & FC B for the bowl final – – 9th & 10th Place – -. The cops pushed the big CH lads all around the park and managed to finish on the correct side, leaving the CH & FC lads in their dust.

7th – 8th play off

Nothing went the way of Havelock Sports Club on day two as the park side faced yet another defeat, this time at the hands of Navy B. The Sailors trailed, however, came and hit hard, ending the game 22-19 in favor of them to secure 7th place in the tournament.

Plate final (5th – 6th) Place

Navy A defeated Army A in a tight encounter, played for 5th – 6th Place. The Sailors came from behind to beat fellow rivals as the game ended 22-19 in favor of the defending champions.

3rd – 4th Place

In similar fashion to their B team, CH & FC A were stunned by Air Force in the battle for 3rd and 4th Place. The game was dominated by CH & FC, however, the airman came from behind to grab a surprising win to consolidate third place.

Cup Final

Surprise package, Police A played their hearts out in the first half of the cup final, however, conceding on the brink of half time as Danush Dayan crosses the white wash for a converted try.

Leading 7-0 at half time, the lads from the hill capital came out with vengeance to score right after the break through Danushka Ranjan to stretch their lead.

Vishwamithra Jayasinghe crossed over for his team’s third try as the lads from Kandy ran away with a superior second half performance, even though Kasun Suranga — who impressed throughout the first leg — scored for the Cops at the dying embers of the game.

Women’s Matches

In the women’s final round robin game, Navy defeated Army to remain unbeaten, however, the two sides met each other in the women’s Cup final. The Army women took a slender lead into the half time break, however, the girls from Welisara came back with two tries on the second half to secure a 15-7 win.

The Plate final game between CR women and the Air Force Women ended with the girls from Rathmalana recording a 40-00 victory.
