The Major Club League Tournament 2019/2020 organized by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will resume on the 10th of August in Colombo, five days after the Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
All Cricket island-wide postponed
The Domestic Cricket season, which was halted in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic, were set to resume on the 14th July with the commencement of the Tier A – Super Eight and Plate matches. But, the resumption was delayed once again following concerns raised by several clubs with the restructured tournament rules.
However, following an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on the 28th of July, which approved two resolutions for the 2019/2020 tournament structure, the Tournament Committee have decided to conduct the remaining matches.
The approved resolutions
- To reduce the duration of Tier ‘A’ Super Eight matches from 4 days to 3 days.
- To suspend the Promotion/Relegation provisions.
With the unanimously approved resolutions, SLC’s plans of bringing down the number of Tier ‘A’ teams from 14 to 12 will only be done after the 2020/2021 season.
The Super Eight matches will be conducted from the 10th to 27th August at four selected venues – SSC, CCC, P. Sara Oval and Marians Cricket Grounds in Katunayake, while the Plate matches will be played from the 10th to 24th of the same month in three venues, NCC, Colts and De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa.
SLC provides relief to Sri Lanka’s cricketing community
All seven venues are expected to maintain all health guidelines issued by the Government Authorities with regards to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is expected to commence soon after on the 28th of August and the players selected for the franchise-style T20 competition are expected miss the final round of the Super Eight matches.
The defending champions, Colombo Cricket Club (CCC) will start as front-runners to retain the title after finishing on top of Group A with four outright wins, while teams like Colts Cricket Club (Group A 2nd placed) and Chilaw Marians Cricket Club (Group B top placed) have an outside chance to topple the reigning champions.
As per an official in the Tournament Committee, no decision has been taken on the resumption of the Tier ‘B’ competition which was also stalled in March due to the Covid-19 situation. However, the players have been granted 50% of their match fees from the remaining Tier ‘B’ matches.
