Colombo Kings defeated the Jaffna Stallions for the second time in the Lanka Premier League 2020 as they recorded a 6-run win on the back of a Laurie Evans century in the 18th game of the tourney.

After winning the toss, Jaffna Stallions decided to go back to their stronger suit as they opted to bowl first. They made several changes to their playing XI after losing two games in a row.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man – Laurie Evans

The entire Colombo Kings innings was about this man. He had a not-so-good tournament so far, with his opening partner Dinesh Chandimal has been making up for his misses. But today, Chandimal fell early and his team needed his contribution, the man provided them with his best and beyond.

Evans struck a career-best 108 runs off 65 deliveries which included 5 sixes and 9 fours. This is also the first century of the tournament.

There wasn’t much to do for the other batters in the team as Andre Russell, who faced just 14 deliveries, was the 2nd highest scorer in the innings with 21 runs.

The Stallions bowling lacked fire

The Stallions got a good start with the ball as they kept the Kings to just 31 runs in the powerplay and picked up a wicket. Young Maheesh Theekshana was full of surprises and variations and he bowled brilliantly with the field restrictions.

The regular wicket-takers of Jaffna were neutralised by the Colombo batters as they gave away only 1 wicket for Wanindu Hasaranga and picked up 31 runs off him while Duanne Olivier went for 33 for his 3 wickets.

Gunaratne pushes Kandy into semifinal contention

Both teams were cruising neck to neck till the end of 14th over as the Kings were at 103 for 2. The next over from Binura Fernando set them free as he went for 25 runs in a prolonged over. With that Evans grabbed the momentum and lost Jaffna Stallions in the dust. Jaffna certainly gave away 15 to 20 runs extra.

Wickets keep falling at regular intervals for Jaffna

Jaffna have had the bad habit of losing wickets in crucial situations. That’s exactly what happened today too, their batting looking unorganized lately.

Charith Asalanka looked quite impressive in the way he scored his 32 runs but miscued one to the fielder by playing it across the line.

Shoaib Malik looked like shouldering most of the weight yet again as he and Thisara Perera looked looked to take the game away from the Kings with a dangerous 34-run partnership.

The pendulum-like over

Andre Russell came in to deliver the 16th over with the Stallions requiring 64 off 30. His first 4 balls went for 15 runs and it looked like things were turning in Jaffna’s favour. But, the next two deliveries pulled it back and sealed the win for Colombo as both Perera and Malik were dismissed.

Russell was the pick of the bowlers for the Kings as the West Indian returned figures of 3 for 46 in his 4 overs.

The game went to the last over with Jaffna needing 25 off Russell in it. Wanindu struck a 6 off the second ball and a No-ball flew for a six later. But it was Dre Russ, he knew how to end things in style as he made sure the game was out of reach for the Stallions with a ball to spare.

Jaffna will now fall to the 3rd position in the table as the Kings go to the semis in 2nd place.
