Inaugural Bens-Wesley Big Match ends in a draw

The inaugural annual Big Match played for Cartman Cup between Wesley College and St. Benedict’s College ended in a draw today at Colombo.

St. Benedict’s College resumed day two on 7 runs for no wicket but could not put on an impressive batting display as they were bowled out for just 139 runs in 56.1 overs. The left-arm spinner Thenuka Perera and off spinner Ravindu Sigera had a great outing with the ball as they managed to dismiss three wickets each. 

The visitors began their second innings 89 runs ahead but posted only 90 runs for 5 wickets, setting a target of 180 for the hosts. Semila Liyanage top-scored with a knock of 54 runs off 77 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes. The right-arm seamer Akindu Karunarathna was brlliant with the ball for the Bens as he picked up 4 wickets for 20 runs.

180 runs in 15 overs was a huge task for Bens – therefore it was just a matter of surving the overs left for the day. They managed to play out the 15 overs, putting on 47 runs with a loss of only 1 wicket.
