The 71st Battle of the Golds between St. Sebastian’s College and Prince of Wales College commenced today at De Soysa International Cricket Stadium in Moratuwa.  

Having won the toss, the Cambrian Skipper Dinura Fernando invited the opposition to take the first lease of the wicket. Sebastian’s College got off to a good start as their opening pair added 43 runs for the first wicket in 12.4 overs.

Though they lost another wicket in quick time at 59, Sandeesh Fernando and Yashan Avishka did the repair work by adding 62 runs for the third wicket, putting Sebastianites in a strong position at 121 for 3 in the 33rd over.

Sandeesh, who anchored the innings for the Sebastianites, top-scored with an outstanding knock of 66 runs as he departed as the 4th wicket at 159 runs. The Skipper Sukitha Prasanna also contributed well with the bat, scoring 41 runs, as the Sebastianites posted 254 runs for their first innings.

The Cambrian leg spinner Sumalka Fernando was the chief wrecker with the ball as he bagged a 5-wicket haul for 39 runs, while the off spinner Achala Perera chipped in with 2 wickets for 70 runs for Prince of Wales College.

In reply, Prince of Wales College were in a bit of trouble, losing 3 quick wickets for 53 runs at stumps on day one.
