Surrey’s Sam Curran and Somerset’s Craig Overton have been added to England’s squad for the remaining two ODIs against Australia at Emirates Riverside and Emirates Old Trafford to provide additional fast-bowling options.
With just a day’s turnaround between the third and fourth ODIs, as well as a hectic upcoming schedule of T20I and ODIs, including series against India, England are conscious of the workloads of their fast bowlers. They could also consider some changes for the game against Australia in Durham on Thursday (June 21) with Surrey’s Tom Curran and Nottinghamshire’s Jake Ball, the two spare seamers already in the squad, also in the mix to play.
Sam Curran and Overton were due to play for the Lions in the tri-series against India ‘A’ and West Indies ‘A’ which begins on Friday (June 22) but will be replaced in the Lions squad by Sussex’s Chris Jordan for the first two matches of that tournament. Overton will then rejoin the Lions for the remainder of the matches while Curran has already been named as part of England’s squad for the T20Is against Australia and India.
Neither Curran nor Overton have yet played an ODI although both have made their Test debuts in the last nine months. Overton was part of the one-day squad during the series in New Zealand earlier this year but did not play while this is Curran’s first call-up for a 50-over party. Should both Currans play in either of the next two games, they would be the first brothers to appear for England since Adam and Ben Hollioake in 1999.
