An Indian court has issued an arrest warrant against former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairperson Lalit Modi over allegations of money laundering in a television deal.

Though charges have not been framed against Modi, the Mumbai court issued the warrant on Wednesday at the request of economic investigative body Enforcement Directorate, which said Modi was not co-operating in an investigation into whether money from the deal in 2008 benefited unauthorised persons.

The ED is investigating the routing of money in the TV deal, in which a facilitation fee of $90 million was allegedly paid by one company to another for obtaining telecast rights for the IPL.

Modi has been based in England since 2010. According to procedure, the warrant has to be routed through India’s external affairs ministry.
