All Island Schools Athletics Championship 2024

As the best of the young athletes earned their place in the All-Island Schools Athletics Championship 2024, which is taking place at the Sugathadasa Stadium.  The second day of this Championship was successfully held yesterday (19th), and a significant achievement of the second day was the breaking of five more records.  In the previously held Senior John Tarbat Athletics meet, the athletes accomplished similar feats, carrying their talents over to this meet too.

Among the records, Omal Shashintha of St. Sebastian’s College, Kandana, competing in the under-18 boys’ 400 meters event, set a new junior Sri Lanka record by clocking 46.85 seconds. Earlier this year, during the John Tarbat Athletics Meet, Omal had equalled the junior Sri Lanka record of 47.10 seconds set by Manoj Pushpakumara in 2002, and this time, he managed to claim sole ownership of the record.

Meanwhile, Tharushi Abhisheka of Wickramabahu College, Gampola, representing the under-18 girls’ 1500 meters event, set a time of 4 minutes and 29.97 seconds, breaking a 39-year-old junior (under-18) national record previously held by Dhammika Menike. Tharushi also broke the youth (under-20) record for the same event, which was previously 4 minutes and 33.40 seconds.

Both athletes are still only 16 years old, and it is expected that they will become stars in Sri Lankan athletics in the future if they continue along the path they are now on.

Additionally, H.U. Jayasingha of Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa, set a new meet record in the under-18 boys’ shot put with a throw of 17.15 meters.  Consequently, Ashen Thewarapperuma of Gateway College, Colombo, set a new meet record in the under-14 boys’ 100 meters event with a time of 11.82 seconds.

On the first day of the championship, Gampaha Siri Kurusa Vidyalaya’s Tarani Nirmana set a new meet record in the under-16 girls’ 100 meters event with a time of 12.47 seconds. Yesterday, in the events of the second day, she bettered her own record by finishing the race in 12.45 seconds.

By the end of the second day, the Western Province led the scoreboard with 458 points, while the Southern Province moved up to second place with 134 points.

The third day of the championship is scheduled for today, the 20th of October, and is now taking place.
