Former Sri Lanka captain, Mahela Jayawardena has reportedly turned down an offer from the Board of Control for Cricket in India to be the head coach of team India.
With the tenure of the incumbent head coach Ravi Shashtri coming to a close after the T20 World Cup, India is in search of his successor.
Mahela Jayawardena, who is in red hot demand around the world as a coach, was one of the real interests of the Indian administrators.
However, The Indian Express reported that Jayawardena has turned down the offer citing ‘he is only interested in coaching the Sri Lankan team and the IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians.’
Mahela has been the most successful head coach for Mumbai Indians having coached them for 3 IPL titles since he took over in 2017. He also won the inaugural The Hundred tournament in England with the Southern Brave franchise.
Despite being one of the most-wanted coaches around the globe Mahela is heading the National Sports committee in Sri Lanka and also accepted a role as the consultant coach of the Sri Lankan U19 team for the upcoming ICC U19 World Cup in the West Indies.
