Five matches of the Singer Schools ‘Under 19 Division 1’ Two Day Cricket Tournament 2019/20 were worked off today around the island.  Yasiru Rodrigo (6/22) and Dilmin Rathnayake (5/53) bowled S. Thomas College, Mount Lavinia to an innings victory against St. John’s College, Jaffna. The other encounters were ended in a draw.

Thomas College registered a convincing innings victory over St. John’s College in their traditional fixture which worked off today at Mount Lavinia. Yasiru Rodrigo who picked up 6 wickets for 22 runs in the first innings and Dilmin Rathnayake who picked up 5 wickets for 53 runs in the second innings were the chief contributors of the victory for the school by the sea.

Dharmapala College took major honors against Maliyadeva College in the drawn traditional encounter which worked off today at Dharmpala College grounds in Pannipitiya. Dineth Nelumdeniya was the star performer of the match as he grabbed a match bag of 11 wickets for 70 runs for Dharmapala College.

The traditional fixture between St. Anthony’s College and Wesley College also ended in draw today at St. Anthony’s College grounds in Kandy. Sri Lanka U19 cap Chamindu Wickramasinghe who scored a half century (67) with the bat and left arm spinner Nimnaka Jayathilaka who picked up 5 wickets for 60 runs with the ball starred in the match representing the lads from Kandy.

Joes, Zahira end a low-scoring thriller in a draw

Zahira College, Colombo vs St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa

St. Joseph Vaz College managed to take honors on day one against Zahira College in their Group D fixture which commenced today at Zahira Colleg Grounds in Colombo. After been put into bat first, Zahira batsmen were bundled out for just 77 runs. Menusha Perera was the pick of the bowlers the visitors as he took 4 scalps for just 6 runs. 

In reply, St. Joseph Vaz College posted 157 runs on the board with Sri Lanka U19 cap Nipun Dananjaya top scoring with 41 and Menusha Perera adding valuable 40 runs with the bat. The hosts began their second innings 80 runs behind and were 13 runs for 2 wickets at the close of play on day one.
