Five matches of the Singer Schools ‘Under 19 Division 1’ Two Day Cricket Tournament 2019/20 were played today across the island. Muditha Premadasa of Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala also reached his 1000-run mark for the season. 

St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa vs St. Benedict’s College, Colombo

The traditional encounter between St. Sebastian’s College and St. Benedict’s College ended in a draw today at De Soysa Grounds in Moratuwa. The St. Sebastian’s College overnight batsmen resumed day two at 119 for 1 and made 312 runs all-out for their first innings.

Dunith Jayathunga (82), Janishka Perera (61) and Kalana Sandeep (50) starred with the bat scoring half-tons. Isuru Lakshan shone with the ball for the visitors taking 5 scalps for 41 runs. The visitors struggled with the bat in the second innings as they lost 7 wickets for 113 runs at the close of play on day two. Nadeera Fernando (4/38) and Kalana Sandeep (2/32) starred with the ball for the hosts.

Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa vs St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala

The Group B encounter between Prince of Wales College and St. Anne’s College ended in a draw today at Prince of Wales College Grounds in Moratuwa. However, the first innings points went to Prince of Wales College. After being 93 runs for 4 wickets overnight, the visitors lost the remaining 6 wickets for just 83 runs. Kavindu Ekanayaka top-scored with a knock of 61 runs for St. Anne’s. 

Ravindu Janith (3/70) and Thavindu De Mel (2/35) starred with the ball for the hosts. Prince of Wales College began their second innings 38 runs ahead and declared the innings at 202 for 5 setting a target of 241 runs for the visitors. The chase was not on as there were only 13 overs left closing the match in a draw.

Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala vs St. Servatius College, Matara

Maliyadeva College managed to take honors in the drawn Group C encounter against St. Servatius College which ended today at Maliyadeva College Grounds in Kurunegala. Muditha Premadasa who stroked a century (183*) yesterday made another half-ton (67*) today for the hosts leading his aggregate total to 250 runs in the match. Left-handed wicket-keeper batsman also became the first player in the 2019/2020 season to reach the elusive 1000-run club. In 19 innings, he has scored 1024 runs with an average of 60.23.

Devapathiraja College, Rathgama vs Rahula College, Matara

The traditional encounter between Rahula College and Devapathiraja College ended in a draw today at Uyanwatta Stadium in Matara. After being 139 runs for 3 wickets overnight, Rahula College added only 71 runs to the total losing 7 wickets as they were bowled out for 210 runs in 63.1 overs. 

Leshan Amarasinghe strokes a ton; Ruvin Senevirathne takes 4-fer

Binara Sanketh (82) and Bhagya Ediriweera (56) stroked half-tons for Rahula College while Jeewaka Shasheen became the pick of the bowlers for Devapathiraja as he picked up a 5-wicket haul for 64 runs. Also, Irushka Thimira grabbed 3 more wickets for 47 runs. 

The Rathgama boys began their second innings 73 runs behind and made 171 runs in 65.3 overs. Manuja Dulneth who picked up a 5-wicket haul in the first innings starred again with the ball taking 5 more scalps.

The Group A encounter between De Mazenod College and D. S. Senanayake College commenced today at De Mazenod College Grounds in Kandana. After being put in to bat first, the hosts posted 280 runs in 66.5 overs. Nimna Fernando stroked a magnificent century (142) while Saliya Jude contributed with a half-ton for De Mazenod.

In reply, the visitors struggled with the bat as they lost 6 wickets for 93 runs at the close of play on day one. Asitha Silva (3/31) and Sihina Sithumina (2/14) were instrumental in causing the batting collapse of the visitors.
