Struggling Negombo Youth shock Colombo FC

Negombo Youth stunned 10-man Colombo FC winning 2-0 in the Dialog Champions …

Just four days after suffering a shock 2-0 loss to bottom table Negombo Youth, Colombo FC were eyeing a big win to get back on track while Ratnam, having beaten Java Lane recently, looked to add more frustration into the Colombo FC camp.

The defending champions dominated possession and generated some early scares, but could not convert them into goals despite the shaky Ratnam defence.

Their first clear chance came in the 5th minute when Mohamed Aakib floated in a beautiful cross through the left flank, but Zarwan who got on the end of it could only head it over the posts.

Ratnam slowly got themselves into the game and maintained some possession, but lacked the creativity to take the ball beyond the opposition back-line and test Kaveesh Fernando.

Colombo FC kept moving forward taking the ball into dangerous positions, but the Ratnam defence was up to the task this time as they managed to hold the fort clearing every opportunity.

Ratnam’s first chance of the match came through a counter attack when Sasanka Dilhara Jayasekara took the ball into the box and his effort, forced a brilliant save from shot stopper Kaveesh.

It was all Colombo FC from there onwards as they dominated proceedings through blazing attacking display of football. Mohamed Fazal created a moment of magic when he dribbled past two defenders, and tried to curl the ball into the net, but was unluckily denied by the upright.

The ball found the feet of Momas Yapo inside the box, with Ratnam failing to clear a corner off Bodric Dimitri, who took a shot on the turn, only to be denied by the crossbar this time. Ratnam missed a golden opportunity when Aman Faizer lobbed an open header over from inside the box over the crossbar from a Jayasekara cross.

The visitors broke the deadlock moments before the end of the first half through Yapo. Dimitri beautifully floated a free-kick from the left into the box before Yapo got on the end of it to easily head into the bottom corner.

Half time – Ratnam SC 0 – 1 Colombo FC

Both the teams stepped into the second half with their attacking shoes on. Colombo FC looking to extend their lead and Ratnam in search of an equalizer, but the game looked dull with neither being able to concoct any goal scoring opportunities.

However, it was Colombo FC who found their second of the day when Zarwan Johar, who had a brilliant game throughout, curved the ball into the net from the left edge of the box before wheeling off in celebration.

Things got a physical as the game went on and things went from bad to worse for Ratnam as their captain Sachintha Maduranga, who was returning from a red card suspension, was shown a direct red for a horror tackle on Yapo.

Ratnam, left with a mountain to climb with only 10 men kept on attacking and was rewarded with an easy opportunity through a defensive error, but Mohamed Safeer could only kick it wide from in front of the goal.

Colombo FC sealed the game with 2 more well deserved goals from Yapo who completed his hat-trick in style; the first through a comfortable finish from in front of the goal and the second through a penalty, earning a massive victory over Ratnam SC.
