Joes VS Joseph Vaz

Nipun Sumanasinghe of St Joseph’s College scored 122 as the Joes posted 303 for 8 in their match against St. Joseph Vaz College in the Singer U19 Cricket tournament today at Albert F Peiris Grounds.

Sumanasinghe came in at number three after the dismissal of Revan Kelly and scored a well composed knock of 122 in 189 deliveries which helped St Joseph’s post a formidable first innings total of 308 in 77.2 overs.

The Joes won the toss and elected to bat first and lost three wickets for 69 runs but U19 national cap, Jehan Daniel and centurion Nipun Sumanasinghe put up 125 for the fourth wicket to drag them out of trouble. Jehan scored a quick fire 63 off just 76 balls with 7 boundaries and 2 maximums.

A couple of quick wickets left the Josephians in a spot of bother at 218 for 6. Nipun took the responsibility onto his shoulders and batted along with the lower middle order which saved Joes from getting bowled out cheaply.

He received good support from Dineth Jayakody who scored a good cameo of 46 runs. After the fall of Dineth and Nipun, the Josephians decided to declare their innings at 308 for 8. In the bowling department for Joseph Vaz, Dhanajaya Perera and Madushan Ranathunga bagged two wickets each.

Joseph Vaz came in to bat with a few overs left in the day. Jehan Daniel struck early with the new ball and then Skipper Harin Cooray took another wicket in the dying moments the day which left Joseph Vaz at 24 for 2 at stumps on day 1.
