The quarter-finals of the SLC Major Emerging Tournament 2019/20 concluded today with SSC qualifying for the semi-finals along with Chilaw Marians CC and Army SC. Colts CC who beat Air Force SC yesterday is the other team who’ll compete for a spot in the final.
In the game between Tamil Union C & AC and SSC, the boys from P. Sara Oval were cruising towards a comeback victory chasing 283. With former Ananda and St. Peter’s skippers, Kamesh Nirmal and Ranmith Jayasena unbeaten on the crease they were well placed on 96/1.
Come the 3rd and final day of the game Jayasena was sent back early and opened the game for SSC. Despite Nirmal’s fighting knock of 88 which was also supported by crucial knocks from Damitha Silva and Supun Waragoda the SSC spinners were able to snatch a thrilling 11-run win for their team. Akash Senaratne of De Mazenod College and Taneesha Weerakoon of St. Peter’s College were the chief destroyers claiming 3 wickets apiece.
Chilaw Marians CC were 8 down for just 95 runs when they walked out today to resume their 2nd innings, but they were still in the game with a lead of 197 runs.
Their lead was however extended by 45 runs with the help of some valuable contributions from the tail.
