Kelly and Sooriyabandara star in opening day

Isipathana and Royal shared honours at Reid Avenue, while St. Joseph’s took control against DS Senanayake in the Singer Schools U19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament matches which commenced today.

St. Joseph’s College vs DS Senanayake College

Josephians won the toss and opted to field first on a dry surface in Bloomfield grounds. DS Senanayake opening pair got off to a solid start as they progressed to 56 before the visitors took control of the traditional encounter. Both right-handers Pasindu Aditya and Dasun Perera were the top run getters as DS Senanayake got bowled out for a below-par 186 inside 51 overs.

The Josephian spinners were impressive as they bagged 5 wickets apiece to restrict the home team. 17-year-old left-arm spinner Salinda Seneviratne finished with 5/45 in his 16 overs, while off-spinner Ashen Daniel took 5/61 in his 16.4 overs.

In reply, the lads from Darley Road were cruising along ending the day on 163/4 in 42 overs. Dashing left-hander Revan Kelly was the highlight of the day with an unbeaten 102 off 133 balls that included 11 fours and a massive six.

Royal College vs Isipathana College

Royal skipper Pasindu Sooriyabandara won the toss and elected to bat first at Royal grounds. stylish right-hander Pasindu stroked 89 off 166 deliveries that included 11 boundaries and his deputy Kavindu Madarasinghe chipped with a classy 52 off 114 balls. They put up an impressive 109 stand for the 4th wicket as the Royalists declared their innings on 241/9 in 77 overs.

Skipper Ayana Siriwardane was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors as he took 4 scalps for 56 runs in 21 overs with his crafty off-spin.

In response, Isipathana College opening pair scored 50 runs as they batted 16 overs for the day before the hosts grabbed the first wicket.
