The first-phase of the All Island Junior John Tarbet Athletic Championships prepped as a tri-segment encounter concluded yesterday (13). After three days of back to back events held in Matara, the Western and Southern province encounters were held from the 11th to the 13th of July.

Competitions were held in four age group categories, empowering the children between the ages of ten to fourteen. Athletes who exceeded the given qualifying standard were awarded merit awards while a selected number from each event were granted qualifying standards. Approximately 300+ qualification standards were presented in total for the girls’ and boys’ categories, while more than 1300 athletes were presented with merit certification.

The sprint events of 80m, 100m and 200m were among the usual favourites encompassing a large number of young atheletes to exceed the qualification standards. However, the field events comprising of the major throws namely Discuss Throw, Javelin Throw and the Shot Putt event hold more qualitative performances in comparison.
