The Singer Under 15 Division I pre-quarter final was worked off at Balapitiya this morning with Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda taking on D.S Senanayake College, Colombo to book a slot in the final eight.

It was one of school cricket’s enthralling encounters as both teams battled it out with some excellent spirit to the game but the Sokians held their nerve until the very last ball. After winning the toss Dharmasoka College decided to bat, but kept losing wickets very fast. Hasitha Rajapakse gave the Sokians a solid start but could not convert his good start into a compact finish.

Dharmasoka College was at 95 for the loss of 5 wickets by the end of the 20th over. A gutsy effort by the Dharmasoka tail-enders pushed the score to 142, before they were bowled out in the 37th over. Hasitha Rajapakse remained the highest run getter for Dharmasoka College with four short of fifty. In the bowling department Madawa Chathuranga and Manura Pieris picked up two wickets each for D.S Senanayake College.

With 143 to get and 50 overs in hand the Dons were off to a flying start scoring 28 runs in the first two overs. It looked like D.S Senanayake College would wrap up the innings quicker than expected. Gaviru Senhas who gave the Dons a good start was dismissed at 30 by Imal Tehara. By the 12th over it still seemed like D.S Senanayake College were on their way to victory losing 3 wickets for 73 runs.

But Imal Tehara had not given up yet. After sending the top three back to the pavilion, Tehara was hungry for more as he ripped through the D.S Senanayake College batting line up with some help from Chanaka Janaga. The Dons were in a vulnerable position as they stumbled to 6 wickets for 101 by the 20th over. Dharmasoka College gave it their all one last time as they bundled up D.S Senayake College with two runs to spare in the 33rd over.

Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda will now face Prince of Wales College Moratuwa in the quarter-finals.

The 2nd pre-quarterfinal of the Singer Under 15 Division one tournament, continued…

Royal outclass Devapathiraja

Royal College Colombo hosted Devapathiraja College Rathgama for another Singer Under 15 Division I pre-quarterfinal at Reid Avenue on Sunday. Royal College won the toss and elected to bat first.

Nethin Panapitiya and Resendu Thilakaratne were impressive with the bat, but both batsmen could not pass the hundred run mark as they were dismissed in the 90s. Still Royal posted a mammoth 352 for the loss of 6 wickets in their allocated 50 overs.

Chasing a score of 353 was never an easy task. Devapathiraja College started off on a very positive note but the asking run rate was too much to handle. By the 5th over Devapathiraja College gave up the resistance and decided to take on the bowling. The Royalists capitalized on the pressure they had built by scoring 352 and dismissed Devapathiraja College for 85 in the 24th over. Pawan Sandeep top scored with 23 whilst Kanika Dayarathna picked up 4 wickets for 28 for Royal College.

The battle seemed like a one sided encounter as Royal College outclassed Devapathiraja in all departments of the game. Royal College Colombo will now face P De S Kularatne College, Ambalangoda in the quarterfinals.
