Angelo Mathews will be unavailable for the Twenty20 International series against Bangladesh with a calf injury, Asanka Gurusinha, the Sri Lanka Cricket Manger, confirmed yesterday.

“He is definitely out of the first T20 and he is unlikely to play the second game as well. It’s very disappointing because Angelo had put in lot of hard work. His hamstring is fine now, but his right calf is not okay. We know how important Angelo is for us and he knows that too. He has told me that he is not likely to go for the IPL if he is not 100 percent fit. Champions Trophy in England and Wales is our next big target and Angelo is fully committed to that.” Gurusinha said.

Mathews, who hurt his hamstring during Sri Lanka’s tour of South Africa in January, was expected to be fit for the T20 series having missed the Test and ODI series again Bangladesh. He also missed the short T20 series in Australia.

“It’s very frustrating for me. Having missed out on the Tests and ODIs, I was looking forward for the T20s. But the physios tell me that I would need more time to recover. The plan was for me to start bowling on Monday. But that didn’t go too well.” Mathews said.
