The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Major Limited Over Tournament got underway in dramatic fashion today, as Saracens SC stunned one of the pre-tournament favorites SSC on the opening day.

The strong SSC batting line up was restricted to 220 all-out in their allotted 50 overs with Sri Lanka Test player Dimuth Karunaratne making a solid half century.

Jeffrey Vandersay, Dhammika Prasad and Chamara Kapugedara also made useful 30’s in the middle and lower order as SSC recovered after a mini collapse to reach 220.

Right arm seamer Saliya Saman delivered an impressive spell of bowling picking up 3/33 in his 10 over spell, while right off spinner Roshan Jayatissa captured 3/41. Leg spinner Sachithra Perera was also economical conceding just 21 runs in his 8 overs while chipping in with two wickets.

It was always going to be a tricky run chase on a difficult wicket for stroke-play but the stylish Andy Solomons looked like he was batting on a different track. He smashed the SSC bowling to all parts of the FTZ grounds in Katunayake on his way to a bludgeoning   124 off just 87 balls inclusive of 16 fours and 5 sixes.

He didn’t get much support from his top and middle order but the lower middle order managed to help Saracens scrape past their victory target of 221 runs.

Sachithra Senanayake was impressive for SSC picking up 2/29 in his quota of 10 overs while interestingly discarded Sri Lanka Test cap Dhammika Prasad went for 52 in his 6 wicketless overs.
