Sri Lanka ‘A’ team fast bowler Asitha Fernando, who is currently on tour in the West Indies, is reported to have given a net bowler in Jamaica one of his own pairs of bowling shoes during a practice session.

Sri Lanka ‘A’ team led by Dhananjaya De Silva is currently in West Indies on a full tour to play 3 unofficial ODIs and 3 unofficial Test matches against their Windies counterparts.

During a net session, right-arm seamer Fernando has realized that one of the Jamaican fast bowlers, who came into the nets to bowl at the Lankan batsmen, was struggling with his landing as he was wearing shoes with rubber soles. The fast bowler, who has a reputation of being quite aggressive on the field, did not hesitate to hand the young man a pair of his own boots.

“As ambassadors of the country, guess to make their mark off the field is equally important as on the field.” Sri Lanka Cricket ‘A’ team manager Charith Senanayake posted on his personal Facebook account.

20-year old Fernando, hailing from Katuneriya – a coastal city, 56 kilometers up north from the capital, Colombo represented St. Sebastian’s College, Katuneriya under difficult circumstances before coming into the limelight by representing Sri Lanka U19 in the Youth World Cup in Bangladesh last year. Following his success with the ‘A’ team, SL U23 team and domestic performances, Fernando made his ODI debut for Sri Lanka against Zimbabwe in July.

It is perhaps the hardships he faced during his early days that moved him to such a thoughtful gesture. It is heartening to see a man as young as Fernando leading the way off the field as well.
