Despite losing by 4 wickets in a thriller against South Africa in Sharjah, Sri Lanka is not out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. They can still make their way into the knockouts technically but for that to happen, plenty of things must go their way in the next six Group 1 matches of the Super 12 stage.

First of all, Sri Lanka’s task is simple, they need to beat world No. 1 ranked, hot favourites England on Monday (1st November) at Sharjah and the defending champions, West Indies (4th November) at Abu Dhabi. If the Lankans manage to win these two games, they will have six points from five matches. However, that will not be enough for Sri Lanka to qualify for the semis. They will need the results of the other four Group 1 matches to be favourable as well. The islanders will have to rely on Bangladesh, who have lost all three of their previous Super 12 matches, to beat South Africa and Australia in the coming week.

  • 2nd November – Bangladesh must beat South Africa
  • 4th November – Bangladesh must beat Australia
  • 6th November – West Indies must beat Australia
  • 6th November – England must beat South Africa

If the six matches go in favour of Sri Lanka, they will qualify for the semi-finals without the Net Run-Rate (NRR) coming into play.

However, if Sri Lanka win their remaining two games while Australia and South Africa win one game each, then the Net Run-Rate equations will be the deciding factor. Currently in terms of the NRR, Sri Lanka is not so far behind South Africa. Also, they have a superior Net Run Rate than Australia. Therefore, anything is still possible in Group 1.

By any chance, if England, with a superior run-rate, beat Sri Lanka, then they will have no chance of qualifying. Also, if either South Africa or Australia win both their games, then Sri Lanka will have no chance of making the semi-finals.
