Yupun Abeykoon ends 2022 with two gold medals

Yupun Abeykoon ended the 2022 season on a high after winning 2 gold medals at the Italy Club Championship.

Abeykoon, who represented Nissolino Sports Club at the games, won his first gold medal in the 100m event, clocking 10.35s. This was Abeykoon’s first race for his club.

Although his initial plan was to end the season after the Diamond League finals, Abeykoon participated in this event to earn some valuable points for his club. Along with the 100m individual event, Abeykoon also won the gold medal in the 4×100 relay event to make it a remarkable debut event for his brand-new club.

Abeykoon, who is currently ranked 20th in the world, secured his personal best time of 9.96s this year to make him the first Sri Lankan and South Asian to break the 10 second barrier. He also qualified for the World Championship this year and became the first Asian to win a medal in the 100m event at the Commonwealth Games.
