The Western Province Rugby Union once again nominated the same office bearers for the forthcoming Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union scheduled to be held 14 May.

SLRFU called for fresh nominations for the 2015 election after the sports ministry stated not to give permission to re-elect any official who has a served a total period of four years as a major office bearer (President, Vice President, Secretary, Asst. Secretary, Treasurer and Asst. Treasurer) of any of the 52 Sports Associations. Earlier elections were scheduled to be held before 31 March, but with the new requirements made by the Sports Ministry, they have given six weeks to call for fresh nominations and to then hold elections.

It was a unanimous decision by the WPRFU, after 12 affiliated clubs out of 13, proposed that incumbent president Asanga Seneviratne and its board Lasitha Gunaratne vice president, Nalin de Silva secretary and Kiran Atapattu treasurer continue to serve in the same posts.

But according to the sports ministry’s newly proposed law none of these people will be in a position to compete at the election. However, repeating the same office bearers for the election has created fear of an interim committee being set up at the SLRFU.
