Sri Lanka National Champion Nilani Rathnayaka competed in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase Heats at the World Athletics Championship 2022 (Oregon 2022) earlier today (16th) in Oregon, USA.

31-year-old Rathnayaka ran in heat 1 of the event and managed to record a timing of 9:54.10min, securing 13th place. Unfortunately, this performance was not enough to secure the Sri Lankan a spot in the finals, as only the first 3 of each heat went through along with the next 6 fastest athletes.

Norah Jeruto of Kazakhstan finished the heat in 9:01.54mins to win the heat and took one of the three automatic qualifying spots for the finals. Incidentally it was the second-quickest time ever run in World Championship history.

The finals of the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase will be held on the 20th of July at 8.15 a.m. Sri Lanka Time.

Earlier today, Yupun Abeykoon competed in the Men’s 100m heats, and recorded a timing of 10.19s but failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Apart from Abeykoon and Rathnayaka, one other Sri Lankan athlete, Gayanthika Abeyrathne (800m), will be competing in the World event.
