Sri Lanka A managed to sneak through to a 3-wicket win over the UAE in the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, which commenced in Hong Kong earlier today.

The game started well for the UAE, who won the toss and elected to have a bat first. The opening pair of Esha Oza and Theertha Satish started well, putting on 23 for the 1st wicket before Satish fell as Malsha Shehani’s 1st victim. Oza was excellent on the other end, peeling off 2 fours and 2 sixes as she raced to 39 off 30.

Madushika Meththananda used to her experience to great effect, varying her pace to pick up the big wicket of Oza and then Kavisha Egodage in quick succession. The run-out of skipper Chaya Mughal really put the cat amongst the pigeons as the Sri Lankan bowlers build on the pressure to slow the UAE down, while continuing to pick up wickets.

Only Khushi Sharma was able to cross double figures apart from the opener as the UAE finished with a disappointing 95 in 19.3 overs.

Sri Lanka started steadily with National Caps Vishmi Gunaratne and Umasha Thimeshini taking their time in the middle. They looked comfortable facing up to the UAE bowlers, yet kept losing wickets to loose shots along the way and when skipper Imesha Dulani fell in the 16th over, the task wasn’t looking easy, as they needed 25 off 24, with 5 wickets in hand.

Some panicked running saw Sri Lanka lose two more wickets, but not before they pinched a few singles and twos thanks to some poor fielding, ensuring that they got to the target with a ball to spare.

It was a labored effort by both teams, with the UAE hitting 4 fours and 2 sixes, while Sri Lanka managed just 4 fours and 1 six in their innings.

Sri Lanka A’s next game will be against a formidable Bangladesh A team on Wednesday.
