West Indies U19 Team registered a massive 195-run win over Sri Lanka U19 Team in the second Youth ODI of the 3-match series played today (30th August) at Dambulla. With this win, the visitors managed to level the series, 1-1.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka U19 skipper Sineth Jayawardene invited the opposition to take the first lease of the wicket.

Sri Lanka started off things pretty well with the ball, dismissing the Windies’ opening pair for 48 runs. However, Joshua Dorne and Jordan Johnson rescued the visitors putting on a massive 160-run partnership for the 3rd wicket before the off-spinner Vihas Thewmika trapped the former in front for 56 runs.

Johnson went onto score a headline-grabbing knock for West Indies, smashing a brilliant century – his first in Youth ODI cricket. Johnson stroked an aggressive century – 105 runs off 79 balls with 12 fours and 3 sixes putting the visitors in a strong position going into the final phase of the innings.

However, Sri Lanka managed to drag things back thanks to a brilliant spell from the skipper Jayawardene who picked up 4 wickets for 36 runs. After being 208 for 2, the visitors lost 6 wickets for 101 runs in the latter part of the innings to be restricted to 320/8 in the allotted 50 overs.

Chasing a massive target of 321 runs to win, the hosts needed a solid platform at the top, but it wasn’t to the case as they faltered losing 5 quick wickets for just 34 runs inside first 10 overs.

Malsha Tharupathi who came to bat at No. 8 tried to resurrect Sri Lanka’s innings with a blistering half-century, but it wasn’t not enough as the hosts suffered a massive defeat allowing the Windies to draw level in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka U19 will take on the visiting West Indies U19 in the 3rd and final Youth ODI of the 3-match series on the 1st September at the same venue.
