The wait is over, the stage is set, and the rivalry continues as the third edition of the “Battle of the Blazing Blues” unfolds at the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium on the 18th of July 2025. The lasses from Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, and St. Anthony’s Convent, Katugastota, are eagerly waiting to take the field on Friday as two proud legacies prepare to face off once again.
The inaugural edition of the Big Match was won by the Mayans, while the Antonian girls made a bold comeback last year, squaring the tally by clinching the trophy. Without a doubt, the St. Anthony’s outfit is determined to complete a title defense, while the Mahamaya girls are ready to fight for the glory lost in the previous edition.
This year, the Mahamaya team will be led by all-rounder Ruwindi Neththikumara, who brings a rare combination of right-handed batting and left-arm off-spin bowling. Supporting her as vice-captain is right-arm fast bowler and right-handed batter Yenuli Sahansa Amarasinghe.
But the real trump card for the Mayans is their “ace player,” just 15 years old, Aseni Thalagune, who has already represented the Sri Lanka Under-19 national side at the Youth Cricket World Cup held in Malaysia in January 2025. Her magical spell of 2/18 against the World Cup runners-up, the Australian youth side, helped guide Sri Lanka to a famous win. She also took two wickets each in tough fixtures against the West Indies and India, helping Sri Lanka qualify for the Super Sixes Round. Including her, the Mayans boast a young but talented and passionate team determined to win.
All-rounder Kawmini Ranathunga will lead the St. Anthony’s Convent side in this epic hill country battle, with the resilient Poornima Gunawardhana serving as her deputy. The Anthonians field a balanced team rich with all-rounders. They have watchful frontline batters ready to play long innings, supported by skilled bowlers hungry for wickets. Comparatively, the Anthonians have a more experienced side and carry a strong legacy in girls’ cricket.
This year’s match promises to be a tough battle, as both teams have retained many players from last year’s encounter. On the greens of Pallekelle Cricket Stadium, they return not just to play, but to fight for honour, tradition, pride—and above all—to uphold the spirit of the game.
