Upali to contest cricket elections

Even yesterday afternoon, Upali Dharmadasa was insisting that he wasn’t going to contest cricket elections, but by about 4:00pm with 30 minutes left for nominations to close, he submitted his nomination to contest the upcoming cricket elections, scheduled for later this month.

Dharmadasa had earlier told The Island that he wasn’t contesting due to work pressure, but said yesterday that several member clubs had persuaded him to seek re-election.

Upali’s brother Jayantha was also interested in contesting the elections, but withdrew saying the atmosphere wasn’t conducive for him to come in.

Both Upali and current Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga, who have sought re-election were present yesterday at the media briefing to launch the Sri Lanka – Bangladesh series, but journalists were told they will not answer any questions pertaining to the cricket elections.
