Maris Stella College, Negombo have secured their place in the Semi-finals of the U19 Inter-Schools Division 1 Tier ‘B’ Two Day Tournament 2022/23.

Maris Stella College, Negombo managed to qualify for the Semi-finals of U19 Inter-Schools Division 1 Tier ‘B’ Two Day Tournament as they claimed a 4-wicket win over St. Sylvester’s College in the Quarter-final encounter, played today at FTZ Sports Complex, Katunayake.

After being 163/4 at the close of play on day one, the Maris Stella batting lineup witnessed a major collapse, losing 6 wickets for 66 runs and being bowled out for 229. Nimesha Silva was the chief wrecker with the ball for St. Sylvester’s College as he bagged 5 wickets for 48 runs.

The lads from Kandy began their 2nd innings 68 runs behind and were bowled out for 189, setting an easy target of 122 runs for Maris Stella College to win. Ramith Bandara, who picked up 4 wickets in the first innings, once again showcased his skills with the ball, snaring 6 wickets in the 2nd innings and taking his match tally to 10 wickets for 116 runs.

It was definitely not a walk in the park victory for Maris Stella College as they had to battle hard to cross over the line. They had some hiccups in the run-chase, but managed to hold their nerves to clinch the win at the end and reserve their place in the Semis.

Meanwhile, the traditional encounter between Devapathiraja College and Mahanama College ended in a draw today. Devapathiraja College posted a solid first innings total – 354 on the board – thanks to the century maker Pawan Sandesh and Jeewaka Shashen’s brilliant half-century.

In reply, Mahanama College also showcased a strong batting display, putting on 206/2 at the close of play on Day two. Kavindu Amameth stole the limelight with an unbeaten century for Mahanama College.
