Singer U19 Division 1 Cricket Tournament 2020

217

Two matches of Singer U19 Division 1 Cricket Tournament 2019/20 came to a close today, 28th January 2020. Royal College earned major honours against Maris Stella College while Mahinda College out played St. Aloysius’ College in the other game.

Royal College, Colombo vs Maris Stella College, Negombo

Royal College played Maris Stella College at Reid Avenue in a group ‘A’ encounter where they ended on top after scoring 320 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, thanks to Kavindu Pathirathne (69*) and Prashan Kalhara (68*), who played the salvation knocks and remained unbeaten. They won the toss and chose to bat first. Former captain of the blue and golds, Kavindu Madarasinghe, struck a fifty upfront but the middle order did not perform up to standard. This put Pathirathne and Prashan, both of who are well known for their bowling, in a situation where they had to pull out some heroics with the bat and they delivered. Thilina Perera, who picked up 3 wickets after a lot of work, was the only bowler to have any sort of success. Royal College declared their innings with 7 wickets down.

The boys from Negombo had a tough outing trying to negate the right-arm off spinner Prashan Kalhara, who came in for his second strike at them, this time with the ball. Kalhara picked up 6 for just 22 runs, putting the Maristonian innings in jeopardy. Sahan Perera, however, seemed to be confident and fought back valiantly. He scored a workman-like 91 runs but to no avail. Maris Stella College were shot out for 178 runs. Gishan Balasooriya undid 3 more Maris Stella batsmen. The second-innings were even worse for Maris Stella College, and they were lucky to evade a defeat as their skipper Naveen Fernando resisted with a 40 not-out. Kalhara topped the bowling card yet again with figures of 2 for 6 runs. Maris Stella ended the day with 154 runs for the loss of 9 wickets.
