Four games took place in the U19 Division I schools cricket tournament today across the island.
Moratu Maha Vidyalaya registered a commanding first innings win over St. Anne’s College Kurunegala at Moratuwa. The hosts batting first managed to put 288 runs on the board thanks to Sanajan Senevirathne’s magnificent century. Defending their first-innings total, the boys from Moratuwa bowled out their opponents cheaply for a mere 139, enforcing the follow-on. St. Anne’s, batting to avoid an outright innings defeat, managed to bat out the entirety of the second day, posting a huge 300 runs for the loss of just eight wickets, leaving the hosts with only the first-innings points.
>>Sanjana Senavirathna century helps Moratu MV dominate Day 1
At Katuneriya, St. Sebastian’s College, Katuneriya pulled off a famous first-innings victory, narrowly missing out on an outright win over Isipathana College, Colombo. The hosts secured first-innings points by just two runs. At the close of play on Day Two, Isipathana needed a further 46 runs for victory, while the hosts required three wickets to seal the game. However, with the light fading, St. Sebastian’s had to settle for first-innings points.
At Moratuwa, Prince of Wales’ College secured first-innings points at the end of play on Day One against Mahinda College, Galle. Shehan Ashein starred with the ball for the Cambrians, claiming a five-wicket haul to restrict the visitors to just 142 runs.
In reply, Prince of Wales’ College wasted no time in going past the target. Thanks to Pasan Cooray, the hosts did so with ease. Cooray fell agonisingly short of a well-deserved century, while Sehas Ashinsa was the standout performer with the ball for Mahinda College.
>>St. Benedict’s edge past St. Aloysius’ in tense low-scoring encounter
St. Thomas’ College, Matara hosted St. Anthony’s College, Wattala at the Uyanwatta Stadium today. At the end of play on Day One, the hosts sat comfortably after securing the first-innings points.
