U17 Cricket – Trinity, St. Sebastian’s and Isipathana cruise to quarter-finals

The under 17 division one inter-school cricket tournament’s pre-quarter final stage commenced on 27th July (Monday) with three matches being worked out in Colombo and Kandy. 

Trinity College Kandy, St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa and Isipathana College advanced to the quarter-finals beating President’s College Kotte, De Mazenod College Kandana and St. Joseph’s College respectively. 

 

Trinity College vs President’s College

All-rounder Shanogeeth Shanmuganathan excelled with both bat and ball to help Trinity College clinch a comfortable 5-wicket win at Asgiriya grounds.

The visitors batting first were bundled out for 73 runs in less than 17 overs. Left-arm spinner Shanogeeth claimed 4 wickets while Thisaru Dilshan took 3 scalps. Chasing a solitary target, the Trinitians lost 5 wickets but Shanogeeth’s quick-fire 37 helped them cross over to victory with ease. 

Presidents College – 73 all out in 16.3 overs: Shanogeeth Shanmuganathan 4/09, Thisaru Dilshan 3/26.

Trinity College – 74/5 in 11.5 overs: Shanogeeth Shanmuganathan 37, Hasintha Jayasuriya 19, Chamod Wickramasuriya 4/34.

 

St. Sebastian’s College vs De Mazenod College

Sri Lanka under 19 player, Avishka Fernando slammed 170 runs to anchor his college team, St. Sebastian’s to a massive 215-run win at Moratuwa. 

After opting to bat first, Sebs accumulated 292 runs for 9 wickets in their 50 overs. Right-handed Avishka stoked 13 fours and 11 sixes during his 127-ball knock. Mishen Silva too contributed with a timely 51. 

The visitors in their chase was bowled out for just 75 runs as Avishka came back to perform with the ball taking 3 wickets for just 6 runs. Lasith Crosspulle was the only player to bat well for the boys from Kandana as he made 29 runs.

St. Sebastians College – 292/9 in 50 overs: Avishka Fernando 170, Mishane Silva 51, Praveen Jayawickrama 26*, Sangeeth Deshan 3/57.

De Mazenod College – 75 all out in 19.5 overs: Lasith Crosspulle 29, Avishka Fernando 3/06, Praveen Jayawickrama 2/15.

 

Isipathana College vs St. Joseph’s College

Heshan Fernando and Pathum Nissanka added an unbroken 196-run stand for the 4th to help Isipathana College beat St. Joseph’s College by 7 wickets at BRC grounds. 

The Josephian skipper Harin Cooray won the toss and elected to bat first. They were made to work hard for their runs as they managed only 226 runs in their allotted 50 overs. All-rounder Jehan Daniel pummeled 62 runs in just 55 balls with five fours and three sixes. Wicket-keeper batsman Shewon Fonseka and opener Revan Kelly contributed with 44 and 39 respectively.

Off-spin duo of Pathum Nissanka and Ayana Siriwardena grabbed 2 wickets each.

Chasing 227 runs to win, Isipathana was restricted to 33 for 3 by speedster, Jehan Daniel’s extravagant opening spell. The home team needed to string a match-winning partnership and it came in the form of Heshan Fernando and Pathum Nissanka as they guided their team to victory with over 86 balls to spare. 

Fernando scored his unbeaten ton in 106 balls with 11 fours and 5 sixes while Nissanka was not out on 95 slamming 11 fours and 3 sixes during his 87-ball stay in the crease.

St. Joseph’s College – 226 all out in 50 overs: Jehan Daniel 62, Shevon Fonseka 44, Revan Kelly 39, Pathum Nissanka 2/30, Ayana Siriwardena 2/40, Niranjan Wanniarchchi 2/44.

Isipathana College – 229/3 in 35.4 overs: Heshan Fernando 101*, Pathum Nissanka 95*, Jehan Daniel 3/59.
