U15 Cricket: Thomians crowned champions

S.Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia was crowned champions of Under 15 Division 1 Tournament 2015 as they comprehensively beat St.Sebastians College Moratuwa in the final played at MCA grounds yesterday.

Winning the toss and batting first St. Sebastians openers put up a modest partnership as they scored 34 for the first wicket. Opener Nishitha Abhilash was the first to be dismissed as he was plumb LBW to the bowling of Thevin Eriyagama. Lahiru Fernando was removed for just 4 runs as he was caught out at slip.

Following the loss of the second wicket, the Sebastians lost their momentum in the game as wickets fell at regular intervals. Wickets number 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 fell for just 19 runs as the Thomian bowlers ran through the opposition’s middle order with ease. Dineth Wanniarachchi, Shehan Dineth Kannangara and Dellon Peiris were the chief destroyers for the school by the sea.

The second highest partnership of the game was number 8 and 9 for St. Sebastians’ as Mahela Fernando and Janishka Perera put up 26 fighting runs for them. The final three wickets for the Sebastians fell for 35 runs as the Thomian bowlers rounded off a good performance to restrict the Moratuwa lads for 103 runs in 45.5 overs.

Chasing a low total of 104, S. Thomas did not get off to a good start as they lost their first for just 13 runs. Wicket number two and three fell for cheaply as S. Thomas were found themselves in a spot of bother as they were 20 for the loss of 3 wickets in the 4th over.

Dineth Wanniarachchi and Yohan Perera put on a match winning 71 run partnership for the 4th wicket as they drove their team towards a memorable win. Yohan Perera scored a match winning 60 off 78 balls with 10 fours included in his innings.

Dellon Peiris joined Dineth Wanniarachchi ans together the pair took the Thomians to a comfortable victory with 14.4 overs remaining in the game.
