2nd semi final of U19 Division I singer schools cricket tournament between St Sebastian’s College and St Thomas’ College got under away yesterday at the P Sara Stadium.

St Sebastian’s College won the toss and elected bat first yesterday and at the end of days play they were in a commanding position at 286 for 7 with Mishen Silva unbeaten on 104 runs. Thomians had to strike early on the second day and they did by taking Mishen’s wicket early on. Sebs could add much runs for the remaining three wickets as they were bowled out for 319 runs in 78 overs.

Thomians came onto bat today with a daunting task ahead of them. Rashmika Opatha and Yohan Mendis gave them a flying start with century stand for the opening wicket. Rashmika reached his half century while Yohan missed out the milestone by 3 runs. After that 107 runs stand from the two openers, Thomians lost 5 wickets in a cluster and found themselves in a spot of bother at 131 runs for 5 wickets.

Skipper Sachitha Jayathilaka and Romesh Nallappaeruma then got together and put up a good fight back. Their 87 run partnership came to an end when both Romesh and Sachitha lost their wickets in quick succession. Sebs came back strong towards the end of days play with three wickets on the trot. Left arm spinner Vinuja Ranasinghe did the damage to the top order by taking 3 wickets while Nimesh Bandara and Praveen Jayawickrama bagged two wickets each in the latter part of day 2.

At stumps on Day 2 St Thomas’ were 246 for 8 in 92 overs with Shenal De Silva and Dellon Pieris unbeaten on 12 and 7 respectively. The Thomians are still trailing by 73 runs while St Sebastian’s are just 2 wickets away from claiming first innings victory.
