Tharjini Sivalingam retires from International Netball

Sri Lanka’s highest scorer and world renowned Tharjini Sivalingam has announced her retirement from international netball, effective immediately.

She announced her retirement in a statement on her official Facebook page.

It read,

“Thank you, Sri Lanka! I officially announce my retirement from Team Sri Lanka. However, my Netball career will continue overseas. It’s with a heavy heart that I have taken this decision, nonetheless, I feel this is the appropriate time that I have decided to branch out.”

Tharjini Sivalingam was born on December 30th 1978, in Punnalaikadduvan in Jaffna. It was not until 2004 that she was discovered by Thilaka Jinadasa and made her Sri Lanka debut in 2009. She was part of three Asian Netball Championship title winning teams in 2009, 2018 & 2022 and runners up teams in 2012 & 2014.

She won the Best Shooter award in the 2011 and 2019 Netball World Cup scoring 290 & 348 goals respectively. Tharjini, who finished with 113 Test caps, holds the record for the most goals scored in a netball match when she scored 77 goals against Singapore at the 2019 Netball World Cup.  

Tharjini was part of the Sri Lanka squad who played in the 2023 Netball World Cup but did not feature regularly. She currently plays her domestic netball for the City West Falcons in Australia under Australian Diamonds assistant coach Nicole Richardson.
